Commuters across Switzerland are contending with a fresh wave of train delays and disruptions as Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) embarks on a wide-ranging infrastructure modernization campaign. The extensive upgrade works, involving track replacements and system enhancements, have affected some of the busiest routes, including the Zurich–Bern corridor and Geneva region connections.
Regular travelers are reporting increased journey times, missed connections, and crowded carriages as services operate on altered timetables. Several major stations, such as Zurich Hauptbahnhof and Lausanne, are experiencing periodic platform changes, resulting in confusion and tight transfer windows.
SBB spokespersons have addressed public concerns, emphasizing that the current disruptions are necessary to secure the long-term reliability and safety of the network. “We appreciate passengers’ patience,” said an SBB representative. “These upgrades are essential for meeting future demand and maintaining our high standards.”
SBB has announced that construction works will continue throughout the summer, with phased openings of upgraded segments planned for late autumn. In the meantime, SBB suggests travelers consult updated schedules and use mobile apps to plan their journeys more efficiently.
Once completed, the infrastructure overhaul is expected to improve punctuality, increase train capacity, and accommodate Switzerland’s growing population. Until then, patience and flexibility remain key for the country’s train commuters.
